Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
